Renowned Bulgarian investigative journalist Viktoria Marinova has been brutally murdered by unidentified persons. An investigation has been launched by the Bulgarian police to bring the culprits to justice. She is the fourth high-profile journalist who has been killed in the Europe in the recent history; Swedish journalist Kim Wall, Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and Slovakian journalist Jan Kuciak are the other prominent European journalists who have been killed in the recent past. Notably, all of them are known for their contributions in the risky sector of investigative journalism; some of them were even part of the sensational exposures of some high profile corruption scandals in the recent past.
Several reputed journalists and journalist organisations have strongly condemned the unfortunate trend of raising violence against journalists, particularly female journalists, across the country.
Several European leaders have directed the Bulgarian investigators to do a detailed investigation into the murder of the journalist.
It is high time to articulate a feasible framework to protect the journalists working in the risky areas such as in the area of investigative journalism.
Bulgaria is the most unsafe country for journalists in the European continent.
