As the United Nations General Assembly is inching towards a crucial voting session on the Jerusalem issue, the pressure is high on India to choose between the Arab League and the United States.
The United State recently recognised Jerusalem as the capital of the Israel and articulated a plan to shift the US embassy to the disputed city, triggering serious protests and demonstrations across the world, particularly in the Arab nations.
The proposal presented before the UNGA will decide whether the US should reverse the policy and whether the issue should be allowed to resolve through further negotiations between Israel and Palestine.
A similar proposal presented in the United Nations Security Council was blocked by the US using its veto power (notably, all other members except the US representative supported the move, putting the powerful country in a difficult state in the global forum).
The Arab League, which already approved a similar proposal, has approached several countries including India, as an effort to reach beyond the Arab nations, to seek support for the proposal.
Similarly, in order to avoid another humiliation, the US has already initiated its effort to ensure all those who enjoyed the support of the White House, including India, will stand with the country in this crucial situation.
A foreign policy expert has suggested that India should stay out of the voting process in order to avoid a crisis.
