Poll implications: BJP not unstoppable; Congress still incapable

Yesterday was a great day for the Grand Old Party. It wristed the three prime states of the Hindi heartland from the BJP –in one of the three states, the BJP’s government was more than a decade old.

It is a much-needed victory for the Congress. It helps to give a clear message that the Saffron Party is not unstoppable. It also enriches confidence in the minds of the old party’s ground level workers, who were extremely worried about the repeated failures their party suffered in the near past.

Now, the big question is: does the victory gives the centrist party as much confidence as to crush the rightist party in the upcoming general election.

This question is what worries the victorious Congress the most at this moment. The Congress leaders know very well that the present defeat is enough to energise the party cadres in the ground level, but not the party.

In India, the behaviour of electorate is difficult be predicted. Many times, the Indian electorate proves that it thinks differently in each election.

Still, PM Narendra Modi is the most powerful and charismatic political figure in India. Unfortunately, the Congress Party at this moment is incapable to project any person, other than Rahul Gandhi, against the PM in the upcoming race for the PM post. Importantly, from the Deva Gowda government experience and V P Singh government experience, it remains crystal clear that how long the Congress extends support to a non-Congress leader led government.

Moreover, it is unclear whether there is a Congress trend in the Hindi heartland. Even though all situations were favourable to the centrist party –the anti-incumbency factor was unusually high this time, it struggled to even cross the majority line by its own in at least two of the three states it wristed in the Hindi heart land.

It is high time for the Congress to understand that there are many shortcomings in its plan for the 2019 general election.
