SC worried about the rise in the number of deaths due to potholes

The next times when you escape from a pothole accident unharmed, just thank the God for the mercy he shows to you, because you are one among the few luckiests in the world and only those who have immense blessings of the God can become this much lucky. A report presented by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety says that nearly 14,926 deaths have happened in the last five years as a result of accidents due to potholes.

When the report has been brought to the notice of the top court, it has held that the rise in the number of deaths due to potholes was unacceptable. Notably, the court has observed that the rise in the number of deaths due to potholes was the indication that the authorities responsible for the maintenance of the roads were not doing their duty properly. The Supreme Court has also sought the response of the Central Government in the issue.

The Central Government will have to submit its response in the issue within the timeframe of few months. The case will be considered for the next hearing on mid-January.

If the SC’s move trigger a national-wide discussion on this matter, that will be the best thing the report can do.
