The possibility for severe protest is increasing consistently in Barcelona, as the ministers of the Spanish government is going ahead with their plan to conduct a meeting in the capital of Catalonia, the region where a movement demanding independence from the Spanish mainland caused severe damages in their social, political and economic atmosphere recently.
Though the meeting is aimed to improve the Spanish government’s relation with Catalonia, no serious efforts are evident towards that extent. Most probably, it is the reason the a section of Catalonians consider it as a provocation.
The pro-independence protesters have gathered in the streets across the region in large numbers. In some places, they have even clashed with the police officials deployed to manage the situation.
The protesters have blocked the border regions. A severe clash has erupted when the police have tried to remove one such blockage installed by the protesters.
Several people have been arrested by the police so far. It remains unclear how many people have been booked so far exactly.
As per a media report, there are no sign of the reduction of tension in the region. A political expert says that the time and place selected for the meeting is not right. Most pro-independence protesters are unhappy with the way the Spanish government has dealt with their movement for independence and the manner their leaders have been treated, says the expert. He adds that there is no surprise that the pro-independent protesters see the latest move of the government as a clear provocation.
