US govt criticises European commission’s probe over Apple

The United States government has strongly criticized the European Commission’s investigation over the US’s mobile conglomerate, Apple. The European Commission had announced an investigation over the Apple’s tax dealings around two years ago. It reportedly alleged that the Irish government had given special tax waivers to the US’s company for setting up a headquarters in the country. The commission further claimed that such kind of special waivers is illegal according to the EU law. It is learned that the commission is expected to deliver the much-awaited ruling on next month. If the verdict is negative, the company will have to pay a huge amount as penalty. BBC reported that apart from Apple, several other US’s companies like Amazon and Starbucks are investigated by the commission over similar allegations. Unsurprisingly, the commission asserts that it cannot give a special privilege to the US companies in the probe process. Earlier, the Apple’s management publicly declared that they had not inked any secret deal with any European country. Giving strength to the company’s argument, the Irish government, who had allegedly signed a secret deal, also denied all such allegations triggered against their government. The new issue has unveiled a zone of complication in the EU-US relations. It seems that the US has lost a direct link to EU through Brexit. The commission’s verdict may invite new power crisis in Europe. It is the high time for the US to find a stable, strong alley in EU.
