Cauvery issue: Karnataka to conduct a total bandh today

In order to express a strong disagreement against the Supreme Court’s order over the Cauvery issue, Karnataka called on a state-wide bandh on today. As per the reports, the bandh is expected to interrupt the public life badly as it is more likely to create deserted streets and to block the transport system across the state.Recently, the Supreme Court ordered that Karnataka must share Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu. Since then, Karnataka is witnessing several protests across the state –particularly in the Cauvery basin districts.Interestingly, The Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, has indirectly extended his support to the bandh. Through his social media handle, Twitter, he reportedly appealed for a peaceful bandh, saying we should not destroy our properties to protest the injustice. It is said that almost all political parties have extended their support to the bandh. It is not yet clear whether the BJP or its sister organisations will participate in the bandh or not. Anyway, the government has beefed up its security installations to avoid all possible violence. According to the reports, around ten companies of the central force have been called in. The central force will be installed in the most sensitive regions, the report added.        Moreover, a red alert has been issued by the Karnataka government across the state. The district administration of several vulnerable districts- like Mangaluru, and Ballari- has declared a holiday for the educational institutions. Notably, a national media reported as a police source as saying; those organisations or groups, which have planned immersion of Ganesh idols, would be permitted to do so.
