Meta Fined $567 Million Over Teen Mental Health

A New Mexico state court has ordered Meta to pay $567 million into a teen mental health fund and make major changes to how Facebook and Instagram operate for young users, ruling that the company created a public nuisance that harmed children.

The five-year order requires Meta to introduce youth-safety measures including limits on teens’ monthly usage, restrictions on notifications, tighter controls on adult interactions with minors, safeguards for AI chatbots, and stronger reviews of child sexual abuse reports.

Meta said it will appeal the ruling, while New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez called the decision a blueprint for other states and countries seeking stronger protections for children online. The ruling comes as Meta faces several other lawsuits alleging that its platforms were designed to be addictive and unsafe for young users.
