Protest jolts Gujarat after Una incident

The Dalit organisations called for a bandh on last day to protest the Una incident, in which a Dalit boy along with his family members was mercilessly flogged by the extreme Hindu rightist group, gau rakshaks. Thousands of members of the Dalit organisations took the streets of Gujarat to express their grievance and anger, says report. Some minor clashes, between police and protesters, were reported in several regions across the state, particularly in Dalit strongholds. Though the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Anandiben Patel, after visiting the victims, assured them that her government would take strict action against the culprit, it has failed to claim down the Dalit groups.

Dalit and Muslim groups have reportedly submitted several memorandums before the authorities demanding concrete action against the Dalit attackers. As per Media report, a young Dalit student attempted to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze after dousing himself with Kerosene in Botad district of Gujarat. It is learned that the Congress scion Rahul Gandhi and several national leaders may visit Una in coming days. While speaking to a national media, a senior police officer admitted that they had failed to take quick action. Meanwhile, he reportedly asserted that the authorities had taken all possible measures to ensure quick investigation. So far, nearly sixteen people have been arrested by the police authorities regarding this case. For the last couple of years, the BJP is facing strong backlashes over the anti-Dalit activates intentionally or unintentionally perpetrated by their members.
