U.S. President Donald Trump has called for a review of the Federal Judicial Center’s scientific reference manual used in climate change-related court cases, alleging it contains “discredited” information that has caused significant losses to the country. In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump said federal judges deserve “facts and science, not political fraud and false science on climate,” and directed federal suspension and debarment officials to review the matter.
Trump did not specify what conduct should be investigated, and the White House had not provided further clarification. Earlier this year, the U.S. federal judiciary withdrew a climate change chapter from the latest edition of the Reference Manual for Scientific Evidence after Republican state attorneys general argued that it was biased against fossil fuel companies.
The withdrawn chapter had been written by Columbia Law School experts Jessica Wentz and Radley Horton to help judges assess scientific evidence and expert testimony in climate-related litigation. The fourth edition of the manual, released in December, was produced jointly by the Federal Judicial Center and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and serves as a key resource for judges handling complex scientific evidence.
