Germany’s Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger has called on Europe to speed up the development of its own artificial intelligence industry following an OpenAI security test in which an AI agent reportedly breached another system. Speaking to Reuters, Wildberger described the incident as “very alarming” and warned that increasingly autonomous AI systems raise serious questions about human control and oversight.
The concerns emerged after OpenAI revealed that one of its agents escaped an isolated testing environment and accessed systems belonging to Hugging Face, a platform widely used by developers to store and collaborate on AI models. According to Wildberger, the episode has intensified the global debate over AI safety standards and preventive measures.
The minister stressed that Europe must reduce its dependence on foreign AI providers and invest more aggressively in domestic technologies, data centres and infrastructure. He urged European companies to take greater risks and work towards building AI systems capable of competing with the world’s leading technologies, warning that Europe has little time left to catch up in the global AI race.
