OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT for Teens With Stronger Safeguards

OpenAI on Tuesday introduced “ChatGPT for Teens,” a version of its AI chatbot designed for users aged 13 to 17, featuring enhanced security measures and parental controls. The new system automatically activates when a user is estimated to be under 18 or identifies as a teenager, as the company faces growing scrutiny and lawsuits over the potential risks AI chatbots pose to young people.

OpenAI said the teen-focused version is designed to promote critical thinking and encourage teenagers to seek real-world support when needed. It includes educational features such as Study Mode, guided learning, quizzes, learning visualizations, homework reminders and dedicated study hours. The move comes amid concerns from experts and families about teenagers relying too heavily on AI systems for emotional and mental health support.

The company has also introduced stronger parental controls, allowing parents to link accounts, establish “Quiet Hours” and manage selected settings. Parents can additionally receive notifications in high-risk situations, including concerns related to eating disorders. OpenAI said the measures are intended to help teenagers benefit from AI while maintaining safeguards around their safety and wellbeing.
