Brazil’s Chief Justice Edson Fachin on Thursday ordered the unsealing of thousands of pages from an investigation into an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud involving failed lender Banco Master. The probe has reportedly implicated central bank officials, politicians and members of the Supreme Court, deepening concerns over Brazil’s institutions ahead of a closely contested presidential election.
Justice Andre Mendonca, who oversees the case, swiftly complied with Fachin’s order, according to a court ruling reviewed by Reuters. The move follows a public dispute between Mendonca and fellow Justice Alexandre de Moraes after Mendonca released documents containing messages allegedly sent by Banco Master’s former chief executive Daniel Vorcaro to Moraes. The disclosures have fueled calls for an investigation into Moraes’ alleged relationship with the banker, while Moraes has accused Mendonca of abusing his authority.
The controversy comes as Brazil enters a tense presidential campaign, with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro competing in a tight race. Lula has backed full transparency, saying allegations involving politics or the judiciary should be investigated and disclosed regardless of whom they affect. Fachin has scheduled a September 15 full-court session for the Supreme Court’s 10-member bench to consider allegations surrounding Moraes and Vorcaro, potentially adding further political and institutional uncertainty.
