US Midterm Elections Put AI Stocks and Market Stability in Focus

Investors are closely monitoring the US midterm elections as a potential shift in congressional control could influence financial markets, particularly the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. The elections come at a fragile time for markets, with recent declines in AI stocks raising concerns about volatility. A change in political power could have wider implications for AI data-centre investments, government spending, defence budgets and regulations affecting healthcare, banking and cryptocurrencies.

Opinion polls indicate that Democrats are likely to gain control of the House of Representatives, while the Senate race remains highly competitive. Analysts believe a Democratic victory in both chambers could increase scrutiny of the Trump administration and technology companies, particularly amid growing public opposition to large-scale data-centre developments. UBS Global Wealth Management estimates a 50% probability of a Democratic sweep, a 40% chance of Democrats winning the House while Republicans retain the Senate, and a 10% possibility of Republicans maintaining control of both chambers.

Market strategists expect the election outcome to influence investor sentiment, although a significant market disruption is not widely anticipated. According to options-market data, traders are pricing in an approximately 0.8% movement in the S&P 500 on Wednesday following the results. Historical data from Edward Jones also indicates that the S&P 500 has gained in every six-month period following midterm elections since 1970. However, analysts caution that political uncertainty may ease after the results, while broader geopolitical and economic risks are likely to remain.
