Alabama Prisoner Sentenced to Life for Escape Assisted by Jail Official Who Took Her Own Life

An Alabama prisoner, Casey White, received a life sentence on Thursday after escaping with the aid of a jail official who tragically ended her own life during a police manhunt across three states. During the emotional sentencing hearing held in a Lauderdale County courtroom, White professed his love for the jail official, Vicky White, and expressed remorse to her grieving family.

White, 39, stated that he felt like “the most hated man in the world” and acknowledged Vicky White as the first person who showed him care in six years. Addressing the court, he maintained his love for Vicky White and declared that he would not tarnish her name for anyone present. He revealed that Vicky White had assisted him in escaping, believing that doing what was right was more important than personal consequences. White apologized for the escape, emphasizing that Vicky White’s sole regret was leaving behind her family.

Previously serving a 75-year prison term for various charges, including attempted murder, White was awaiting a capital murder trial when he fled in April 2022. The fugitive duo evaded capture for 11 days before Casey White was recaptured in Evansville, Indiana. Tragically, Vicky White took her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In exchange for pleading guilty to escape, White had the felony murder charge relating to Vicky White’s death dropped. He agreed to the maximum sentence of life without parole.

Members of Vicky White’s family were present in the courtroom during the sentencing hearing. Expressing remorse, Casey White extended his apologies to her family, revealing that leaving them was Vicky White’s only regret. In addition, White was instructed to inform the state if he or any of his family members or attorneys received financial opportunities, such as book or movie deals, related to the high-profile escape. Any proceeds from such ventures would be used to cover his defense costs. White still awaits an upcoming capital murder trial scheduled for August 14, 2023, concerning the 2015 killing of Connie Ridgeway in Rogersville, Alabama. This trial was delayed due to the escape and White’s retention of a new legal team.
