American Airlines Raises Baggage Fees Amid Surge in Fuel Costs

American Airlines has announced an increase in checked baggage fees for domestic and short-haul international flights, as rising jet fuel prices continue to pressure the global aviation industry. The move comes as escalating tensions in the Middle East disrupt key oil shipping routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, leading to a sharp spike in fuel costs. Jet fuel prices, which averaged between $85 and $90 per barrel in February, have surged to around $209 per barrel globally, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Starting Thursday, the airline will raise fees by $10 each for the first and second checked bags on eligible routes. Additionally, the cost of a third checked bag has been increased by $50 to $200, aligning with pricing already implemented in certain regions such as Canada. The revised pricing reflects the airline’s efforts to offset higher operating expenses as fuel prices climb significantly.

Further changes will take effect from May 18, when basic economy passengers will face an additional $5 increase in checked baggage fees. These travelers will also be required to pay for seat selection and will no longer qualify for complimentary system-wide upgrades. However, passengers traveling in premium cabins will continue to enjoy free checked baggage allowances on both domestic and international flights, the airline confirmed.
