Angel of Salvation: Konstantin Gudauskas Honored in Film for Rescuing Hundreds during Bucha Massacre

In the wake of the infamous massacre in Bucha, Ukraine, where over 1,000 civilians lost their lives during the Russian army’s one-month occupation, a glimmer of heroism emerged amid the horror. Konstantin Gudauskas, a Kazakhstani citizen granted political asylum in Ukraine years ago, became an angel of salvation for more than 200 Ukrainians trapped in Russian-occupied territory. Now, his courageous efforts are being immortalized in a new film that depicts the trials and tribulations he faced while navigating Russian checkpoints and witnessing unimaginable atrocities to save innocent lives.

Gudauskas recounted the horrors he encountered during his missions, including arriving to evacuate families only to find them deceased. Despite burying over 70 bodies himself, he persevered with unwavering determination, believing that if his life was needed, it was to save others. Among those he rescued were the famed Ukrainian composer Ihor Poklad and his wife, Svetlana Poklad, who had spent two weeks hiding in their cellar while Russian troops roamed outside. For them and countless others, Gudauskas’ arrival was a beacon of hope and “unreal happiness.”

Gudauskas’ bravery has not only saved lives but has also forged lasting connections. Celebrating holidays and birthdays with those he rescued, he has created a family of his own with the people he selflessly saved. One touching testament to his impact is a pregnant woman he rescued who named her son after him. While he may not have children of his own, Gudauskas said, “I have got a lot of children that I gained during the war.” His unwavering dedication and selflessness have rightfully earned him the title of an angel to everyone he saved.

Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the film honoring Konstantin Gudauskas serves as a poignant reminder of the power of one individual’s bravery and compassion in the face of unimaginable darkness. As the world watches his story unfold on the big screen, his heroic acts will continue to inspire and resonate with people around the globe.
