Nasry Asfura, the Conservative National Party candidate backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has taken an early lead in Honduras’ presidential election, according to preliminary results released on Sunday. With 34% of ballots counted so far, the former Tegucigalpa mayor is ahead with 41% of the vote. Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla follows closely with around 39%, while ruling LIBRE party contender Rixi Moncada holds 20%.
The election, which will determine the country’s next president for the 2026–2030 term, unfolded in a highly polarized atmosphere. In addition to selecting the nation’s leader, voters are choosing 128 members of Congress, hundreds of mayors, and thousands of public officials. Accusations of potential fraud have been exchanged among the top candidates, with Moncada indicating she may not recognize the official results.
Trump’s involvement in the race intensified tensions, as he publicly endorsed Asfura and stated he could work with him to combat drug trafficking. He further warned that without an Asfura victory, U.S. financial support could be reconsidered. Just days before the vote, Trump also announced he would pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez—serving a 45-year sentence in the United States for drug trafficking—should he return to office.
