Biden Criticizes Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Plans, Highlights Threats to Democracy

U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday strongly condemned President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to eliminate birthright citizenship, calling it “awful” and questioning the constitutional validity of such a move. Speaking at the White House, Biden defended birthright citizenship as a fundamental principle of the nation’s identity, rooted in its multicultural strength. Trump had previously announced his intention to use executive action on his first day in office to end the practice, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the United States regardless of parental immigration status.

Reflecting on the upcoming anniversary of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, Biden reiterated his concerns over Trump’s role in the event and its implications for American democracy. He called the insurrection a “genuine threat to democracy” and emphasized the importance of preserving its historical significance. Biden also criticized Trump for using immigration as a polarizing issue during the 2024 presidential campaign, in which Trump defeated Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

Addressing broader threats, Biden pointed to white supremacy and internal political divisions as ongoing challenges. He stressed the need for unity and bipartisan action, criticizing Trump’s efforts to discourage lawmakers from supporting a bipartisan immigration bill aimed at strengthening border enforcement. Biden framed the U.S. as a global symbol of multicultural strength, stating, “It’s the reason why we’re so strong. It’s the reason why we’re who we are.”
