Blue Origin’s New Glenn Rocket Explodes During Launchpad Test

Blue Origin suffered a major setback in its efforts to compete with SpaceX after its uncrewed New Glenn rocket exploded during a hot-fire test at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on May 28. The rocket, which was being prepared for its fourth mission, ignited on the launchpad before erupting into a massive fireball, sending flames and smoke high into the sky. The company confirmed that an “anomaly” occurred during testing and stated that all personnel were safe while an investigation into the incident is underway.

The explosion comes at a crucial time for Jeff Bezos’ space venture, as New Glenn is expected to play a key role in launching commercial satellites and supporting NASA’s Artemis lunar exploration program. The rocket was scheduled to carry 48 Amazon Leo broadband satellites into low-Earth orbit, though the satellites had not yet been integrated with the vehicle. The setback follows NASA’s recent award of a $188 million contract to Blue Origin for lunar rover delivery missions.

Industry leaders acknowledged the challenges involved in developing next-generation heavy-lift rockets. Jeff Bezos vowed that Blue Origin would rebuild and continue its efforts, while SpaceX founder Elon Musk commented, “Most unfortunate. Rockets are hard.” The incident highlights the intense competition between Blue Origin and SpaceX as both companies race to develop advanced launch systems and support future missions to the Moon.
