Canada Joins EU’s SAFE Initiative to Boost Defense Collaboration

Canada has officially reached an agreement to join the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative, a move that will expand opportunities for Canadian defense companies within the European market. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the development on Monday, highlighting the strategic and economic advantages of this partnership.

According to Carney, Canada’s involvement in SAFE will help address critical capability gaps, open new markets for Canadian defense suppliers, and encourage increased European defense investment in Canada. The partnership marks a significant step in deepening transatlantic cooperation in the defense sector.

SAFE, a €150-billion rearmament fund announced earlier this year, forms a central part of the EU’s broader plan to strengthen its defense readiness by 2030. The initiative comes amid growing concerns over potential Russian aggression and uncertainties surrounding long-term U.S. security commitments.
