Families to File Wrongful Death Lawsuit After Deadly UPS MD-11 Crash

Families of the victims killed in the UPS MD-11 cargo jet crash in Louisville, Kentucky, are preparing to file a wrongful death lawsuit on Wednesday, according to one of the law firms representing them. The aircraft crashed moments after takeoff on November 4, claiming the lives of three crew members and 11 people on the ground.

A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed signs of fatigue cracks in the left pylon support structure, which connects the engine to the wing. Investigators found that the plane’s left engine detached during takeoff, leading to the crash. Attorney Bob Clifford, who represents several families, said the findings suggest the aircraft was “old, tired, and well beyond its useful life.”

Following the crash, UPS and other operators grounded their MD-11 cargo fleets. Boeing, which took over the MD-11 program after merging with McDonnell Douglas in 1997, has said it previously recommended that UPS and FedEx suspend operations of the freighter model.
