In a sad announcement on Wednesday, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay revealed the untimely death of former offensive lineman Matt Ulrich at the age of 41. Ulrich, who contributed to the Colts’ Super Bowl victory in 2006, played two seasons with the team. Irsay expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), praising Ulrich not only for his on-field achievements but also as a great person and father. The cause of Ulrich’s death has not been disclosed.
Ulrich, survived by his wife Alison Flikkema Ulrich, and their four sons, Gunther, Dalton, Bowden, and Thoreau, left a lasting impact on his teammates and the football community. A fundraising page has been set up to support his grieving family. Alison Ulrich confirmed her husband’s passing in a heartfelt Facebook post, expressing the deep void left by his departure and the profound love his family holds for him.
Beyond his contributions to football, Ulrich’s involvement in Harvard University’s Football Players Health Study showcased his commitment to the well-being of former NFL players. As an advisor in the study, he delved into the multifactorial causes affecting their short and long-term health. Ulrich’s post-football career included co-founding DexaFit LLC, a chain of body fat and metabolic testing centers, and serving as managing director and partner at Profitable Ideas Exchange, where he led a peer network for executives. The football community mourns the loss of a Super Bowl champion and a dedicated advocate for player health. Our thoughts are with the Ulrich family during this difficult time. 🙏
