Former Nurse Arrested for Allegedly Slamming Two-Day-Old Baby into Bassinet

A nurse who used to work at a hospital in Long Island has been arrested for allegedly picking up a two-day-old baby from his bassinet and forcefully slamming him face-down back into it. The nurse, whose name is Amanda Burke, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, which is considered a misdemeanor according to Suffolk County district attorney Raymond Tierney. However, Burke’s lawyer claims that the charges are not justified by all the facts.

The incident occurred on February 6, 2023, while Burke was working at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York. She was assigned to care for the two-day-old baby in the neonatal intensive care unit when she lifted the infant and quickly flipped him over before slamming him back into the bassinet in a violent manner, according to a statement released by Tierney’s office.

The infant’s father, who was outside the nursery, filmed the incident and reported it to the nursing staff. Burke was then instructed to leave the hospital, and she was terminated from her job several hours later. Following an investigation into her behavior, she was arrested and charged with the aforementioned misdemeanor.
