French Justice Minister Orders Review of 70,000 Child Violence Cases After Girl’s Death

French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin has ordered public prosecutors across France to review approximately 70,000 ongoing allegations of violence against minors following public outrage over the death of an 11-year-old girl. The case sparked widespread concern after authorities revealed that previous child rape allegations against the main suspect had not been acted upon before the tragedy occurred.

Describing the incident as a “terrible failure” of both the state and the justice system, Darmanin instructed prosecutors to examine all formal complaints related to violence against minors as an “absolute priority.” He said the review must be completed by July 14 and emphasized the need to identify any shortcomings in the handling of such cases.

The tragedy has prompted criticism from lawmakers across the political spectrum, who argue that the case exposes serious weaknesses in the justice system’s ability to protect women and children from sexual violence. Darmanin stated that if failures are identified, he will take responsibility and recommend disciplinary measures ranging from official reprimands to dismissal of those found accountable.
