Golf Legend Chi Chi Rodriguez Passes Away at 88

Hall of Fame golfer Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez, known for his vibrant personality and charitable work, has passed away at the age of 88. Rodriguez’s death was announced by Puerto Rican Senator Carmelo Javier Ríos, though the cause has not been disclosed. Rodriguez, a trailblazer in golf from Puerto Rico, was celebrated for both his unique style on the greens and his commitment to giving back to the community.

Rodriguez, born Juan Antonio Rodriguez, rose from humble beginnings in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, to make a significant impact on the PGA Tour and beyond. With eight PGA Tour victories and 22 Champions Tour wins, his career earnings exceeded $7.6 million. Despite his modest playing record, Rodriguez’s contributions to the game through showmanship and philanthropy earned him a place in the PGA World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992. His distinctive “matador routine” and celebratory dance moves became iconic.

In addition to his golfing achievements, Rodriguez was a devoted philanthropist, founding the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in 1979 to support at-risk youth. His humor and love for life remained evident throughout his career, and he continued to engage with the community even after stepping away from professional golf. Rodriguez’s legacy endures through his contributions to both the sport and the lives of those he helped.
