Hormel Foods said on Wednesday it will acquire family-owned chicken company Brakebush Brothers in a deal valued at $1.06 billion, as the food manufacturer seeks to strengthen its presence in the growing value-added chicken market. The acquisition will expand Hormel’s portfolio beyond its established brands, including Skippy peanut butter.
The deal comes as consumer demand for protein-rich meal options continues to rise, driven in part by growing interest in health and wellness. Value-added chicken products, which include prepared and further-processed offerings, have gained traction as consumers look for convenient sources of protein.
The acquisition of Brakebush Brothers is expected to give Hormel Foods a stronger position in the chicken category and broaden its offerings in a segment benefiting from changing consumer preferences. Brakebush Brothers is a family-owned company with a longstanding presence in the chicken industry.
