Popular US influencer and gamer Kai Cenat, known for his massive following across social media platforms, has been arrested and charged with inciting a riot and unlawful assembly in New York City. The 21-year-old, who boasts 5.5 million Instagram followers, over 4 million YouTube subscribers, and 6.5 million Twitch followers, announced during a live stream on Wednesday that he would be hosting a giveaway featuring gifts like the highly sought-after PlayStation 5, gaming peripherals, and computers. The giveaway announcement resulted in thousands gathering at Union Square Park on Friday, prompting law enforcement to intervene.
Cenat, who joined YouTube in December 2012, gained fame through uploading prank videos and documenting his daily life. His active engagement with followers through Twitch live streams contributed to his popularity, earning him recognition as one of Rolling Stone’s 20 Most Influential Creators of 2023. Notably, Cenat also won the prestigious Streamer of the Year award in both 2022 and 2023, an honor created by fellow Twitch streamer QTCinderella.
In a notable Twitch “subathon” event launched on February 1 earlier this year, Cenat streamed continuously for 24 hours a day, engaging in various activities such as gaming, interviews, and even sleeping on camera. His popularity on Twitch skyrocketed, culminating in a record-breaking number of subscribers in March, according to the BBC.
The Union Square Park incident has raised concerns about the potential influence of influencers on public gatherings and the need for responsible communication through social media channels. Authorities are actively investigating the matter, and Cenat is expected to face legal consequences for his role in the chaotic gathering that disrupted public order in New York City.
