A federal judge in New York has released a handwritten document described as a suicide note allegedly written by late financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein before his death in a Manhattan jail in August 2019. The note, revealed through court filings on Wednesday, includes the line: “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.” Epstein’s death while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges was officially ruled a suicide.
U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas ordered the note unsealed after a request from The New York Times, which had reported on its existence last week. The note was reportedly discovered by Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, who is currently serving four consecutive life sentences for drug-related murders. Judge Karas stated that the document qualified as a judicial record subject to public access and found no legal basis to keep it sealed, though he did not verify its authenticity or chain of custody.
The handwritten note, scrawled on a yellow legal pad, also referenced investigations into Epstein, stating: “They investigated me for month – Found NOTHING!!!” According to court records, the note surfaced in July 2019 after Epstein was found injured in his jail cell in what authorities described as an apparent suicide attempt. Epstein later died on August 10, 2019, in a separate incident ruled a suicide. The note gained renewed attention after reports claimed it had never been reviewed by federal investigators and was absent from previously released Justice Department files connected to the Epstein case.
