American actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the groundbreaking 1980s sitcom The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54. Warner drowned on Monday while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica, law enforcement sources confirmed. The country’s judicial investigation department reported that a U.S. citizen with the last name Warner was swept out to sea by a rip current and later pronounced dead at the scene by Red Cross lifeguards.
Warner rose to fame playing the son of Bill Cosby’s character on the NBC series, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination in 1986. He went on to star in several other television shows including The Resident, Sons of Anarchy, and Reed Between the Lines, the latter earning him an NAACP Image Award in 2012. Warner also received a Grammy in 2015 for Best Traditional R&B Performance. In addition to his acting, he was a poet and recording artist, and once hosted Saturday Night Live.
Tributes have poured in following the actor’s sudden passing. The NAACP honored Warner on Instagram, writing, “#RestinPower… Your talent and spirit touched many lives.” Fox Entertainment, where Warner played Dr. AJ Austin on The Resident, expressed heartbreak, calling him “extraordinary” and his roles “unforgettable and timeless.” Warner is survived by his wife and daughter, whose names he kept private throughout his career.
