Authorities in Providence, Rhode Island, on Tuesday renewed their appeal for public assistance to identify the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting at Brown University, as the search entered its fourth day with no suspect in custody. Police released multiple surveillance video clips showing a masked man in dark clothing walking near the campus before and after the Saturday attack. Officials believe the suspect was in the area for hours before the shooting, possibly scouting the location, but said investigators have no evidence yet regarding a motive.
The shooting occurred inside an engineering building during examinations, where the attacker opened fire with a 9mm handgun before fleeing, despite the arrival of police vehicles. Two students were killed and eight others injured, seven of whom remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition. Brown University has since canceled classes and exams for the remainder of the year and implemented heightened security, including restricted building access and increased campus patrols. The prolonged manhunt has left residents and students anxious, prompting many families to keep children indoors and some students to leave the city.
The victims were identified as Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman originally from Uzbekistan and raised in Virginia. Cook was active in campus politics, while Umurzokov was a high-achieving student with aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon. City officials said more than 200 tips have been received and urged patience, stressing there are no credible ongoing threats, even as the investigation remains active and the community on edge.
