Kenneth Iwamasa, the longtime personal assistant of late “Friends” actor Matthew Perry, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for his role in the actor’s ketamine-related death. U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Garnett handed down the sentence on Wednesday after Iwamasa pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death. Prosecutors said he repeatedly injected Perry with the drug, including the fatal dose, despite lacking any medical training.
During the hearing, Iwamasa apologized to Perry’s family, saying he would “forever regret” his actions. Perry’s stepfather, Keith Morrison, criticized Iwamasa for enabling the actor’s addiction and failing to seek help as Perry’s condition worsened. According to prosecutors, Iwamasa continued administering ketamine even after witnessing Perry lose consciousness on previous occasions.
An autopsy concluded that Perry died in October 2023 from the acute effects of ketamine, which caused him to lose consciousness and drown in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. Perry, best known for portraying Chandler Bing in the hit TV show Friends, had openly spoken about his long battle with substance abuse. Four other individuals, including doctors and drug suppliers connected to the case, have also been sentenced, with alleged dealer Jasveen Sangha receiving a 15-year prison term.
