Meta is set to face a major legal challenge in a California federal court over allegations that Facebook and Instagram were deliberately designed to keep children and teenagers engaged and that the company misled consumers about the safety of its platforms.
The seven-week trial, involving Colorado, Kentucky, California and New Jersey, could have major financial and operational consequences for Meta. The states are seeking changes including age restrictions, limits on infinite scrolling and notifications, and modifications to algorithms that promote content to young users. Meta has said it strongly rejects the allegations.
The case comes amid growing scrutiny of social media’s impact on young people. Meta has warned that damages could potentially reach $1.4 trillion, while recent court losses and a $567 million New Mexico judgment have increased pressure on the company. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram chief Adam Mosseri are expected to testify.
