Meta Platforms has criticized European Union regulators after being charged with breaching antitrust rules, in a move that could force the U.S. technology giant to alter how artificial intelligence services operate on its messaging platform, WhatsApp. EU authorities are reportedly examining whether Meta’s restrictions on AI rivals through the WhatsApp Business API limit fair competition in the fast-growing AI services market.
In response, Meta said there was no justification for regulatory intervention, arguing that the WhatsApp Business API is not a dominant gateway for AI chatbot distribution. A company spokesperson stated that consumers and businesses already have broad access to AI tools through app stores, operating systems, devices, websites, and various industry partnerships, making the EU’s competition concerns misplaced.
The dispute underscores rising regulatory scrutiny from the European Commission over how major technology firms integrate AI into existing platforms. The case could have broader implications for how messaging ecosystems are used as distribution channels for AI services, particularly as global regulators seek to balance innovation with fair market access.
