Mexican Mayor Candidate and Supporters Killed in Veracruz Attack

Yesenia Lara, the Morena party’s mayoral candidate for Texistepec, Veracruz, was shot dead along with three supporters during a campaign event on Sunday. The attack, which occurred during a procession of motorcycles and supporters, was captured on a Facebook Live broadcast, showing gunfire and people fleeing the scene. Veracruz Governor Rocio Nahle condemned the violence, vowing to find those responsible. The state’s attorney general has confirmed an investigation into the killings.

The incident highlights the growing danger for politicians in Mexico, especially at the local level, amid widespread criminal violence linked to drug cartels and corruption. This murder follows several similar attacks on public figures in recent months, including the killing of a councilmember in Jalisco and a congressman in Veracruz.

Lara, just hours before her death, had shared a post on social media celebrating the strength of youth that motivated her campaign. Her tragic death underscores the ongoing risks faced by politicians in Mexico, where nearly 480,000 people have been murdered since 2006 due to the country’s escalating violence.
