Powell Warns Against Politicizing Federal Reserve, Urges Protection of Democratic Institutions

Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has warned against the dangers of politicizing the central bank, stressing the importance of protecting democratic institutions in the United States. Speaking while accepting the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, Powell said institutions such as the Federal Reserve, courts, and universities play a vital role in maintaining the nation’s stability, credibility, and global standing. He emphasized that while these institutions can take decades to build, they can be weakened or dismantled much more quickly.

Powell noted that the Federal Reserve has recently faced significant challenges, including political pressure, calls for leadership changes, and scrutiny of its operations. He argued that the Fed’s independence is essential for ensuring monetary policy decisions are made in the best interests of the public rather than being influenced by political considerations. According to Powell, preserving the central bank’s autonomy is critical to maintaining public trust and economic stability.

Although his term as Federal Reserve Chair ended on May 15, Powell has chosen to remain a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors. The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation praised him for safeguarding one of the nation’s most important nonpartisan institutions despite facing sustained personal and professional pressures. This year’s Profile in Courage Award was also presented to the citizens of Minneapolis and St. Paul for their civic response to heightened immigration enforcement activities in the Twin Cities region.
