PPP Secures Dominant Win in Guyana’s General Election, WIN Emerges as Main Opposition

Guyana’s ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has secured a decisive victory in the country’s general election, winning more than twice as many votes as its nearest rival and setting the stage for another term for President Irfaan Ali. The PPP garnered 242,451 votes, achieving majorities in eight of the country’s 10 districts, according to preliminary electoral commission figures. While the final seat distribution in the 65-member parliament has not yet been confirmed, PPP leaders say the results clearly point to an expanded majority compared to 2020.

The election saw a major shake-up in Guyana’s political landscape, with the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, finishing second with 109,015 votes and majorities in two districts. Long-time opposition party A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) trailed in third place with 77,973 votes, signaling a shift in voter loyalty. WIN, just 90 days old, has attracted strong grassroots support, particularly among poor and Indigenous communities, by promising fairer access to housing and opportunities.

While the PPP highlighted its investments in roads, schools, hospitals, and free university education funded by Guyana’s booming oil revenues, opposition parties accused it of unfairly distributing resources to its supporters. Both WIN and APNU raised concerns about alleged voting irregularities and requested recounts in several districts, though election observers from the Organization of American States and the Commonwealth reported no major evidence of fraud. Despite lower turnout compared to 2020, the PPP appears to have strengthened its vote share as Guyana continues to grapple with how to share the benefits of its hydrocarbon wealth.
