Officials in Oslo have reported the largest-ever seizure of cocaine in Norway. The drugs, weighing 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds), were found in boxes of fruit. The discovery was made following a tipoff from German police, who had seized 1,200 kilograms (2,645 pounds) of cocaine in Potsdam earlier in the week.
The exact date and origin of the fruit boxes were not disclosed, and no arrests have been made in Norway. According to police spokeswoman Grete Lien Metlid, it is too early to determine if the cocaine was intended for the Norwegian market or if Norway was being used as a transit point. Lien Metlid also stated that there could be larger networks with connections to Norway, and investigations are ongoing.
The boxes of fruit were delivered to a Bama warehouse, a major Norwegian fruit and vegetable wholesaler. The previous largest seizures of cocaine in Norway were in 2013, with 153 kilograms (337 pounds) seized, and in 2013, with 145 kilograms (319 pounds) hidden in banana boxes. The latest discovery has highlighted the ongoing issue of drug trafficking and the need for continued efforts to combat it.
