Los Angeles police have taken Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of acclaimed Hollywood actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner, into custody on suspicion of killing his parents after the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home over the weekend. Police said Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday night and booked for murder, remaining in county jail without bail. Homicide detectives are expected to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday to determine formal charges.
Rob Reiner, 78, best known for directing classics such as When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Stand by Me and This Is Spinal Tap, and his wife Michele Reiner, 70, were discovered slain on Sunday afternoon. Authorities said their investigation determined the deaths were homicides and that their son was responsible. Local media reported that the couple’s daughter was the first to find them, and that Nick Reiner had been seen arguing with his parents the previous night at a holiday party.
Nick Reiner had long spoken publicly about struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness, experiences that later inspired the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote with his father. Tributes poured in for Rob Reiner, a two-time Emmy-winning actor from All in the Family and a prominent director and political activist, remembered both for his influential body of work and his advocacy for progressive causes.
