Sha’Carri Richardson Arrested in Florida on Dangerous Speeding Charge

U.S. sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested Thursday in Orange County, Florida, and charged with dangerous excessive speeding, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said the Olympic medalist was pulled over by a traffic enforcement officer while driving at 104 mph (167 kph). Officials alleged Richardson was also dangerously tailgating and switching lanes to pass other motorists, prompting the charge. USA Track & Field did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Richardson, 25, is one of America’s most prominent track athletes. She earned a silver medal in the 100 meters at the Paris Olympics and was part of the gold medal-winning 4×100 relay team. Her performances in recent years have solidified her status as a key figure in U.S. sprinting on the global stage.

The arrest adds to a series of past controversies in Richardson’s career. Last July, she was arrested in Seattle on a domestic violence allegation involving fellow sprinter Christian Coleman at an airport security checkpoint. Richardson later apologized and said she intended to seek help. In 2021, she also faced a suspension after testing positive for cannabis, a violation that caused her to miss the Tokyo Summer Games that year.
