Texas Man Charged with Stalking WNBA Star Caitlin Clark

A 55-year-old Texas man, Michael Lewis, has been charged with stalking WNBA star Caitlin Clark after sending numerous threatening and sexually explicit messages to her on social media. Lewis, who was arrested Sunday in Indianapolis, allegedly messaged Clark on X, claiming to drive by her house multiple times daily and threatening to attend her games, according to Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears. Court documents revealed his messages included statements like, “@CaitlinClark22 been driving around your house 3x a day… but don’t call the law just yet.”

Despite a visit from law enforcement on Wednesday, where Lewis admitted to having an “imaginary relationship” with Clark, the messages persisted. Investigators discovered Lewis had traveled to Indianapolis and was staying at a local hotel. Prosecutor Mears commended Clark’s bravery in reporting the harassment, stating, “It takes a lot of courage for women to come forward in these cases, which is why many don’t.” If convicted, Lewis could face one to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

The case comes amid increased scrutiny of harassment against female athletes, following a similar incident involving UConn basketball star Paige Bueckers. In that case, an Oregon man was arrested near a Connecticut airport with an engagement ring and lingerie, after reportedly planning to propose to Bueckers. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by women in sports, who continue to advocate for safety and respect in their professional and personal lives.
