According to a New York Times report citing government documents, the Trump administration has terminated deportation relief for more than 300,000 Venezuelans living in the United States. This decision affects nearly half of the country’s 600,000 Venezuelans with Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Those impacted would lose their deportation protection and work permits 60 days after the federal government publishes the termination notice.
The report indicates that while over 300,000 Venezuelans had TPS protections through April, the other half will maintain their status until September. The document detailing the termination notice has not yet been published, leaving the exact timeline uncertain.
President Trump, who has long sought to curb humanitarian immigration programs, stated on Saturday that Venezuela has agreed to accept the return of its nationals who entered the U.S. without authorization. The Venezuelan government has not commented on the agreement. TPS is typically granted to individuals from countries facing natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other crises.
