Trump Announces Plan to “Permanently Pause” Migration From All “Third World Countries” After Guard Member’s Death

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that his administration will “permanently pause” migration from all “Third World Countries,” escalating his immigration crackdown following the fatal shooting of a National Guard member near the White House. Investigators say the attack was carried out by an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 under a resettlement program. Trump said the suspension would also apply to cases approved during former President Joe Biden’s administration, though he did not specify which countries would be affected or elaborate on the duration of the pause.

The president further vowed to end all federal benefits for non-citizens, “denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility,” and deport any foreign national considered a security risk or “non-compatible with Western civilization.” His remarks came as U.N. agencies urged Washington to respect international refugee commitments and ensure due process for asylum seekers. The U.N. refugee and human rights offices both emphasized that migrants are entitled to protection under global humanitarian law.

Trump’s comments followed the death of 20-year-old National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, who was killed in Wednesday’s ambush, while another guardsman remains in critical condition. Homeland Security officials confirmed that Trump has ordered a sweeping review of asylum approvals and Green Cards issued under Biden. Though the alleged shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, had been granted asylum earlier this year under the Trump administration, the incident has strengthened the president’s push for tighter immigration controls. Trump said the goal is to significantly reduce what he called “illegal and disruptive populations,” adding that “only reverse migration can fully cure this situation.”
