Trump Appoints Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as Special Envoy to Greenland

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland, citing the island’s strategic importance to U.S. national and global security. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Landry would advance American interests and contribute to the safety and security of U.S. allies. The White House, Greenland’s Prime Minister’s Office, and representatives for Landry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It remains unclear whether Landry, who took office as Louisiana governor in January 2024, would be required to step down from his current role to take up the envoy position. Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland should become part of the United States, pointing to security considerations and the island’s mineral resources. Landry has publicly supported the idea, writing earlier this year that integrating Greenland with the U.S. would benefit both sides.

Greenland and Denmark, which oversees the territory’s foreign affairs, have consistently rejected any proposal for U.S. acquisition. While Washington and Greenland recently pledged to maintain “mutual respect,” Greenlandic officials have said Trump’s comments created uncertainty among local residents. Greenland’s foreign minister has stressed the need to rebuild trust to ensure continued cooperation between the two sides, which have worked together for decades on shared strategic interests.
