Trump Confirms Phone Call With Venezuela’s Maduro Amid Escalating Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he recently spoke with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, though he declined to share details of their conversation. The acknowledgment followed a report by The New York Times that the two leaders discussed the possibility of a future meeting in the United States. Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One, described the exchange as simply “a phone call,” without indicating whether it was productive.

The revelation comes at a time when Washington has intensified pressure on Maduro’s government. Trump stirred unease in Caracas on Saturday after declaring that the airspace above Venezuela should be considered “closed in its entirety,” though he later dismissed speculation that military action was imminent. The administration has accused Maduro of involvement in illegal drug trafficking—allegations he has repeatedly denied.

U.S. officials are weighing a range of Venezuela-related options following months of military operations targeting suspected drug routes off the Venezuelan coast. Human rights groups have criticized these strikes as unlawful, while some allies have voiced concerns over potential violations of international law. As questions mounted over a second deadly strike in the Caribbean, Trump said he would review the matter, adding he “would not have wanted such a strike.”
