Trump Signs Executive Order to Safeguard U.S. Food Supply Chain

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an executive order establishing dedicated food supply chain security task forces within the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The move aims to investigate and mitigate risks arising from potential price fixing and anti-competitive practices that could disrupt food availability or inflate costs for American consumers. The White House announced the initiative on Saturday, emphasizing the administration’s focus on stabilizing essential supply systems.

In the order, Trump stated that his administration will determine whether anti-competitive behavior—particularly involving foreign-controlled companies—is contributing to increased living costs in the United States. He also highlighted the potential national security implications tied to food supply chain vulnerabilities. The new task forces are expected to conduct comprehensive reviews of market practices across the sector.

According to the executive order, the attorney general and the FTC chairman are empowered to bring enforcement actions and recommend new regulatory approaches if illegal or harmful practices are uncovered. Their findings could lead to stricter oversight or policy changes aimed at ensuring transparency and competition within the food industry.
