U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota, a move that could allow the deployment of U.S. military forces on domestic soil, as Minneapolis witnesses daily clashes linked to a surge in federal immigration enforcement. In a Truth Social post, Trump warned that if Minnesota leaders do not “obey the law” and stop what he called “professional agitators and insurrectionists” from attacking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, he would “institute the INSURRECTION ACT.”
The warning followed a shooting incident on Wednesday in Minneapolis in which a U.S. immigration officer shot a Venezuelan man who was fleeing a traffic stop, escalating tensions already heightened by a fatal shooting involving a U.S. citizen one week earlier. The Department of Homeland Security said the officer was attacked during the incident, alleging two individuals struck the officer with a broomstick and a snow shovel as the officer struggled with the Venezuelan man, who DHS said was in the country illegally.
The Insurrection Act is a centuries-old law that grants the president authority to deploy military forces within the United States under certain conditions, typically tied to civil disorder or rebellion. Trump’s latest threat has intensified scrutiny over federal enforcement tactics in Minnesota and raised concerns about potential escalation as protests and confrontations continue around ICE operations in Minneapolis.
