Uruguayan Soccer Player Juan Izquierdo Dies After Collapsing During Match

Juan Izquierdo, a 27-year-old Uruguayan soccer player, tragically passed away on Tuesday at São Paulo’s Hospital Albert Einstein, five days after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match. The Nacional defender experienced a cardiac arrhythmia leading to cardiorespiratory arrest, and despite medical intervention, he could not be revived. Izquierdo had been in critical condition, having been on a ventilator and in neurological care due to increased intracranial pressure.

Izquierdo’s death has deeply affected the soccer community, with tributes pouring in from various quarters. South American soccer’s governing body, CONMEBOL, and numerous soccer federations, including those from Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina, have expressed their condolences. Izquierdo’s career, which began with Cerro and included stints with Peñarol, Montevideo Wanderers, and Liverpool, saw him making significant contributions, including helping Liverpool secure a Uruguayan league title in 2023.
