The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported 906 suspected cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including 223 suspected deaths that are currently under investigation. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the virus and continues to affect several regions of the country, including Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.
According to the WHO, 125 Ebola cases and 17 deaths have been confirmed in the DRC. The outbreak has also spread across the border into Uganda, where seven confirmed cases have been recorded, three of which were imported from the DRC. Uganda has reported one confirmed death, though health officials say there is currently no evidence of community transmission in the country.
WHO experts warned that the fatality rate among confirmed cases ranges from 30% to 50%, highlighting the severity of the disease. Anais Legand of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme noted that early diagnosis and treatment can help reduce mortality. The organization also emphasized that there are currently no approved vaccines or therapies specifically designed to treat the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, underscoring the challenges facing health authorities as they work to contain the outbreak.
