Chinese President Xi Jinping called on China and Brazil to safeguard the shared interests of the Global South and jointly uphold the United Nations’ central role in global governance during a telephone conversation with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua. Xi said both countries are constructive forces in maintaining world peace and improving international governance.
Reiterating China’s long-standing stance on regional engagement, Xi said Beijing is willing to remain a close friend and partner to Latin American and Caribbean nations, and expressed support for advancing a China–Latin America community with a shared future. He cited the 2024 strategic partnership aligning China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Brazil’s development priorities in agriculture, infrastructure, and the energy transition as an example of Global South solidarity and cooperation.
The call came amid heightened regional concern following the Trump administration’s seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to face narcotics charges in the United States, an action that has unsettled Latin American and Caribbean countries. The United Nations has criticised the U.S. move as a violation of international law, warning it could set a dangerous precedent with broader implications for the region.
